Choose a better toy.
The best hands-on toy is not necessarily the set with the most pieces, the loudest box, or the longest feature list.
Ask these eight questions
- Can the child change the outcome? Open-ended choices create more replay than one correct sequence.
- Is setup proportionate to play? A thirty-minute setup for ten minutes of play rarely becomes a family favorite.
- Can an adult join without taking over? Look for natural jobs at more than one skill level.
- Will it survive a mistake? Rebuilding is valuable; fragile frustration is not.
- Does it work with things you own? Compatibility usually beats a closed system.
- Can it grow with the child? New challenges should emerge without buying a new kit every time.
- Where will it live? Storage and cleanup determine how often something returns to the table.
- Would we still want it without the screen? An app can support a build, but it should not become the whole activity.
